I have an admission to make about the Naturalpetshop Dog Food Recipes Homemade Dog Style Beef Stew. It smelled so good while cooking that I grabbed a spoon and tasted it.

It was a little bland for me, based on my usual human version is made using Onions and Garlic and their omission along with Salt and Pepper is probably what is responsible for my taste receptors on the tongue wanting more.

However, this was an excellent reminded for me that Dogs should never be given Garlic, Onions or anything else from the Onion family.

Certainly, my two Schnauzer’s (Hank and Hilda) seem to love it exactly as per the recipe and that’s all that matters to me.

Homemade Dog Style Beef Stew

We would actually suggest making a batch of beef bone broth first; using bones from your local butcher. No onions or garlic of course. Once made, strain to ensure no bone fragments
are present. Allow to cool and portion for freezing or using fresh. This is a nutrition-rich way of getting a “gravy” for the stew.

  • 1 Pound Beef stewing meat (Cut into 2cm chunks)
  • 3/4 Cup Carrots (diced)
  • 1/3 Cup Green Beans (diced)
  • 1/3 Cup Green Peas
  • 1 Small Sweet Potato (leave whole to start – see below)
  • 1/5 Cup Flour
  • 1/2 Cup Water or Organic Vegetable Oil
  • 1 Tbsp Tablespoon Vegetable Oil for frying (additional)

Instructions

  • Start by cooking the sweet potato in a microwave for 5 to 8 minutes until firm but tender. Use a skewer to test then put to one side.
  • Slice the stew pieces into 2cm chunks then cook using the 1 Tablespoon of vegetable oil, over a medium heat (10-15 minutes or until well-done).
  • Remove the beef chunks from the pan and reserving the drippings to make a gravy.
  • Remove the beef chunks from the pan and reserving the drippings to make a gravy.
  • Dice the cooked sweet potato into 1.5cm chunks.
  • Heat the pan drippings over medium-low heat, then slowly add flour and water (or substitute with the Bone Broth) into the dripping; whisking to create a thick gravy.
  • Add the cooked meat, sweet potato, carrots, peas and green beans into the gravy and stir to coat.
  • Cook a further 10 minutes until the carrots are tender.

Notes

Serve when cool. Will keep (covered) in the fridge for up to five days.

  1. This sounds and looks very yummy and I would love to treat my girls occasionally. What would the serving size be for a six pound Schnauzer and 22 pound King Cavalier?

    1. One cup of stew for each dog, store in the fridge and serve every other day. I also cook up ground meat (boiled to remove the fat), veggies and brown rice with added olive oil, and kelp help. Beef stew is a nice treat for dogs especially if it very meaty, they eat the veggies since they taste like beef

Thank you for the recipe. My sister’s elderly dog loved it. Instead of making gravy, I used the broth to make brown rice. Both edible for dog and man.

This recipe is crazy. I just wasted a ton of pricey meat trying this. I should have known better when it said 1/2 cup of flour and 1/2 cup water. That’s impossible unless you want paste. Now I have a pan full of flour tasting gooop. Maybe I’m missing something? I really wanted to make this for my picky eater but all I can taste is flour and it turned into a nightmare. I’d love to hear back incase their is something I’m missing or did wrong.

    1. Thanks for the feedback, we have updated the article to 1/5 cup of flour. We hope you can check it out again and try another recipe from our blog.
